The first time I met Xiao Tian, he wanted me gone.

第一次見到小天的時候，他希望我離開。

A friend introduced us. He had been drinking, and at some point he leaned over to her and asked her to tell me to leave the room. Not a fight. Not a scene. Just a quiet request that I stop being there.

是一個朋友介紹我們認識的。他喝了酒，過了一會兒，他靠到她身邊，請她叫我離開那個房間。不是吵架，也沒有鬧場。只是一個安靜的請求，請我不要待在那裡。

The next time we met, it was by chance. Same place, same time, nobody planned it. He saw me, and instead of pretending he hadn't, he walked over. He apologized, sober and plainly, without making me help him through it. Then he said something I didn't yet understand was a promise. Whenever I called, he would come.

We became friends. Somewhere early on he started calling me 大哥. Da Ge. Big brother. I took it the way you take a nickname.

Then I disappeared. For about two years I dropped off, the way you do when life narrows to whatever you are getting through. I didn't call.

When I came back, I called him. We met for pho in Diamond Bar. We each ordered a bowl and barely touched it. We just caught up, two years of it, while the soup went cold between us. It felt like nothing had changed.

That was when I understood what he had promised. Anyone can show up for an emergency. He promised to come whenever I called, and a promise like that only means something if it survives the years you don't.

那時我才明白他承諾的是什麼。誰都可以在緊急時刻出現。他承諾的是，只要我打電話，他就會來。而這樣的承諾，只有熬過你沒打電話的那些年，才算數。

After that, we got closer than we had ever been. One night he told me about his life, his work, the things he wasn't sure of. I remember listening and thinking how far we had come. The man who once wanted me out of the room was handing me the parts of himself he didn't show other people.

He had been calling me 大哥 for years by then. That night I understood what it meant. In Chinese the word is not a description. It is a role. The 大哥 is the one you lean on, the one who is supposed to stay steady. You don't get to claim it. Someone has to decide you are it.

那時他已經叫我大哥好幾年了。那天晚上，我才明白這兩個字的意思。「大哥」不只是一個稱呼，而是一個角色。大哥是讓人依靠的人，是應該要穩住的那個人。這不是你自己能爭取的。必須有人認定你就是。

He decided long before I earned it.

At karaoke he always sang the same song. 安靜, An Jing, by Jay Chou. The title means quiet.

每次去唱KTV，他總是唱同一首歌：周杰倫的《安靜》。

Somewhere along the way it became mine too. Now, wherever I am in the world, if there is a karaoke room, I sing it, record myself, and send it to him. Different countries, different rooms, the same song.

不知從什麼時候開始，這首歌也成了我的。現在，不管我在世界的哪個角落，只要有KTV，我就會唱這首歌，錄下來傳給他。不同的國家，不同的包廂，同一首歌。

A song called quiet, sent from the other side of the world, so he knows I haven't gone quiet again.

一首叫《安靜》的歌，從世界的另一端傳過去，讓他知道我不會再安靜地消失了。

Today he is the person I trust more than anyone in my life. We push each other, first in our work and now in our health, two grown men keeping each other honest about the things that are easiest to let slide.

His name means small sky. One night in Arizona, we sat by a fire under a very big one, cigars going, the moon slipping in and out of the clouds, not saying much. I took a picture. Looking at it now, I think that is what a brother is. Not someone who was there from the beginning. Someone who walked across the room.
